For some reason, I just remembered the day our maid slapped me across the face.
Where I grew up, it was common to have a housemaid, also affordable. My mother was so nice to the maids, she treated them like family. When I visited friends and family, they treated their maids like maids... meaning that their relationship was purely maid and employer.
My mother was different with the maids. Anythime she travelled outside of the country, she came back with clothes and shoes for the maids. There was this one time when she actually bought the same watch for the maid as mine! LOL!!!
Anyway, back to the reason for this post. One evening, when I was about 6 years old, I'd eaten some pancakes and still wanted some more. My mother said I should go into the kitchen to ask Edet (the maid). I went in:
Me: Can I have some more pancakes?
She slapped me across the face!!!
I ran to my mum and I expected her to slap her cos that's what I'd have done. She went to the kitchen and asked Aunt Edet to leave her home immediately and never come back.
That's my sweet mother for you :-)
